Ione Floors for Wet Winters and Hot Summers

Epoxy flooring in Ione has to handle two seasons that pull in opposite directions. Ione sits in the Ione Valley at about 299 feet, where the Central Valley gives way to the Sierra foothills. Wikipedia's simulated 1991 to 2020 normals for the city show about 22.72 inches of precipitation a year, far more than towns on the flat valley floor. Almost all of it falls between October and April. Then summer arrives, and July highs average 93.6°F with almost no rain at all.

Season one: rain, mud and wet tires

From November through March, Ione averages roughly 2.3 to 4.2 inches of rain a month. Rural roads, gravel drives and red foothill soil all end up on garage floors. Bare concrete soaks up muddy water and stains. A coated floor keeps that mess on the surface. We like a medium-to-dark flake blend for Ione garages because it hides tracked-in soil between cleanings. We also add texture to the topcoat for grip.

Season two: dry heat and strong sun

June through September brings long, hot days. January nights drop to about 39°F, while July afternoons climb past 90°F. Concrete expands and contracts across that swing. A coating that bonds well to a properly ground slab moves with the concrete. In summer, sunlight on open garages and patios is the main threat to color, so we use a polyaspartic or other UV-stable topcoat on any surface that sees direct sun.

A historic town with mixed housing

Ione was a supply center, stage stop and rail stop during the Gold Rush. The first brick building went up in 1855, and the Preston School of Industry, known as the Castle, was built between 1890 and 1894. The city did not incorporate until 1953. Housing ranges from older homes near downtown to newer houses and rural lots on the edges of town. About 73.9% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.

In practice, we see three common floor types: 1. Older detached garages with thin or uneven slabs that need crack repair before coating 2. Newer attached garages with smooth slabs that just need grinding 3. Rural shops and outbuildings that take farm equipment, trailers and tools

Prep is the part you do not see

A coating is only as strong as its bond to the concrete. On every Ione floor we test for moisture, grind the full surface, and repair cracks and spalls. Edges and corners get hand-ground so the coating grips there too. Skipping these steps is why kit coatings peel at the tire paths. We would rather spend an extra hour on prep than come back to a failed floor.

Matching the service to the space

  • Garage Floor Coating and Epoxy Flake Floors for everyday parking
  • Polyaspartic Floor Coating where sun exposure or a quick turnaround matters
  • Patio & Pool Deck Coatings for covered or open patios that bake in July
  • Commercial & Winery Floor Epoxy for shops and small businesses in town
  • Metallic Epoxy Floors for a garage converted into a gym or hobby room

We schedule Ione installs around the weather. Late spring and early fall usually give the best curing temperatures. We will not coat a slab that is still damp from a winter storm.

Ione Questions

Can you coat my Ione garage in winter?

Sometimes. The slab has to be dry and warm enough for the coating to cure. After a stretch of rain we test moisture before starting. If the slab is too wet or cold, we reschedule rather than risk a poor bond.

Will red clay soil stain a coated floor?

Mud wipes or rinses off a sealed topcoat much more easily than it comes out of bare concrete. A flake blend with darker and earth-tone chips also hides soil between cleanings.

Do you coat shop floors on rural Ione properties?

Yes. Shop floors get a thicker commercial epoxy build and a gritty topcoat for grip. We look at the slab first and tell you if any cracks or settled areas need repair.
